What is Public Liability Insurance and why is it important for Auto Electricians?

Although as an auto electrician, you are the expert in electronic components of motor vehicles, no matter how skilled or careful you are, there is always a risk of accidentally injuring a third party (such as a customer) or inadvertently damaging property. That is why it’s important that auto electricians consider the role that appropriate liability insurance can play in the safeguarding of their business.

Public liability insurance can help cover an auto electrician if a third party claims they have suffered an injury or alleges that their property (including cars) is damaged due the business activities of the electrician. Auto electricians may be liable to compensate the claimant for the alleged loss or injury, and for any legal costs incurred, even if they are not at fault for the accusation.

For example, if an auto electrician accidentally leaves out some electrical wires on the floor of their garage and a customer trips and falls, the electrician could be liable for any medical, legal or other expenses.

Frequently asked questions

I’ve got a policy with Marsh, how often should I be reviewing it?

The answer to this question is largely dependent on how frequently changes occur to your business. Whether it’s business growth, a change in the complexity of work, or expanding out your services, there are several changes that should trigger an insurance review. As a rule of thumb, we recommend reviewing your policy every year to ensure your business is covered appropriately for its risk exposures.

If you are aware of any changes to your service that should be captured by your policy, please contact the Motor Trades team at Marsh so we can help you update your insurance cover. Some changes are required to be notified to the insurer in accordance with your duty of disclosure.
