Frequently asked questions

The cost will depend on a few factors. They include:

  • Your vehicle’s make and model
  • The nature of your business
  • Your commercial vehicle claims history
  • Levels of cover
  • The coverage provided.

You can discuss your situation and circumstances with one of our brokers to work out how much you’ll pay.

Personal car insurance covers your private vehicle only – for personal use. Some insurers might not cover a personal car insurance claim for an accident that happened while the car was being used for work – such as a delivery.

Business vehicle insurance is designed specifically for vehicles (cars, vans, utes, motorcycles etc) used for commercial purposes. These policies also often have extra benefits that are tailored to the risk needs of commercial drivers, such as windscreen replacement inclusions and hire car extensions.

And not all car insurance covers are the same, so it pays to speak to an expert before making a purchase.

Business vehicle insurance and commercial vehicle insurance are interchangeable terms.

They both refer to the same policy: one that helps cover the costs of theft, damage and accidents to vehicles being used for work purposes.

An insurer will, in most cases, cover a driver for reasonable personal use. Just be sure to read your product disclosure statement before you head out on the road.

You should also speak to your insurance broker to confirm the full inclusions and exclusions of your policy.

In this case, the right policy for you depends on the weight of your vehicles.

You can insure a fleet of light to mid-weight vehicles under a commercial fleet policy. But trucks and large vans will need to be insured under a truck and heavy motor vehicle policy.

Generally speaking, a typical policy can cover loss or damage to your vehicle after an insured event:

  • Loss or damage after an insured event – such as malicious damage, hail, storms, fire and theft.
  • Vehicle replacement
  • Accidental damage to other people’s property (ie third party’s property)
  • Costs of a hire car following theft, damage or emergencies
  • Damage caused by attempted theft
  • Broken windscreens or window glass
  • Towing.

The answer will vary from insurer to insurer. Your policy may look different depending on who provides it – and inclusions may only apply to certain types of vehicles.

Also make sure you read your relevant product disclosure statement (PDS) for a full list of your inclusions – and speak to a Marsh advisor for guidance.

This answer will vary from insurer to insurer. Your policy may look different depending on who provides it – and exclusions may only apply to certain types of vehicles.

Generally speaking, a typical commercial motor insurance policy can’t cover:

  • Pre-existing damage
  • Inebriated or impaired drivers
  • Failure to disclose information
  • Legal liability claims you’re already covered for – such as from compensation schemes, funds and compulsory or statutory insurance.

Insurers also cannot cover you if you haven’t disclosed key information – such as past claims or driving history.

Our brokers can arrange cover for fleets of 15 vehicles or more.

All fleet and commercial motor products will include coverage for third-party property damage and bodily injury (legal liability).

However, our brokers can arrange insurance tailored to your desired limits and requirements.

Insurers are required to publicly disclose who products are appropriate for and any conditions for distributing these. A target market determination (TMD) document outlines this information.

No. Generally speaking, you need to purchase a separate policy for any vehicles that are used for business purposes.

Yes, provided you are an owner, director or partner of the business and your personal vehicle does not make up a majority of the policy.

You may need to consider business car insurance if you use a vehicle for commercial or business purposes, for example, you’re a courier, tradie, food delivery driver or salesperson who travels to visit different clients. You might also be an employer who allows employees to use a business vehicle from time to time.

Business vehicles can be more expensive to insure compared to personal vehicles. However, the cost can vary depending on the type of vehicle, who is using it, and where or how it’s being used.

‘For business purposes’ in the context of car insurance generally means the vehicle is being used for work, rather than for personal use or commuting to and from work.

Generally speaking, cars or vehicles that are classified as commercial include trucks, vans or utes. However, any vehicle used for business can be classified as commercial.
