Do plumbers need public liability insurance?
The answer to this question depends on what state in Australia you complete your plumbing business activities in.
Let’s break it down.
It is a requirement set by the Victorian Building Authority for plumbers to have the prescribed level of public liability insurance in place before renewing or requesting their plumbing license. Cover arranged by Marsh meets these set requirements, including cover for work completed over two stories.
All other Australian states and territories
While other state governing bodies do not require plumbers to have in place a public liability policy, Marsh strongly recommends all plumbers consider arranging public liability insurance to cover their business.
The value of public liability insurance
Let’s face it, any plumber, be they one year out of an apprenticeship or ten years on the job, runs the risk of having an accident.
Public liability insurance can protect plumbing businesses if personal injury or damage to a third party or their property occurs due to the plumber’s work.
Take the following example – An improperly crimped pipe that causes a water leak to go on long enough and results in damage to a client’s kitchen walls. In this situation, the plumbing business could be held liable to pay for any damages to the client’s property and any legal costs incurred as a result. If the plumber is self-employed, this could also expose them personally.

Reviewing plumbers insurance: Why not all policies are an apples for apples comparison
We understand that the price of your plumbing insurance plays a big role when comparing different policies. However, it shouldn’t be the only factor to look out for when completing a side-by-side comparison.
Insurance providers can base a policy’s premium on the risks they take on and having a high number of exclusions can reduce these risks, which should result in a lower premium. That’s why we recommended reviewing the policy wording and/or product disclosure statement beforehand to help make sure the cover you are arranging meets your specific business requirements.
Much like cheap work tools, the last thing you want is to get caught out on-site with a policy that doesn’t do its job correctly!
At Marsh, we negotiate competitive premium prices and insurance cover to deliver value to businesses. We also team up with providers and industry associations to ensure the policy on offer is suitable for your industry’s insurance needs.
Marsh is proud to be the endorsed insurance broker for the Master Plumbers and Mechanical Services Association. Our ongoing relationship and 20 years plumbing industry knowledge means we understand the unique requirements of Master Plumber members.
I’ve got a policy with Marsh, how often should I be reviewing it?
The answer to this question is largely dependent on how frequently changes occur to your business. Whether it’s business growth, a change in the complexity of work, or expanding out your services, there are several changes that should trigger an insurance renewal or review. As a rule of thumb, we recommend reviewing your policy every year to ensure your business is covered appropriately for its risk exposures.
