What we cover
Public Liability Insurance
If you accidentally injure a third party, such as a client, or damage their property (including items), you may be liable to compensate them for their loss or injury, and for the legal costs incurred. Public liability insurance provides financial cover for a business up to the limit of liability the insured has chosen.
Personal Accident Insurance
Personal accident insurance, also known as personal injury insurance, is designed to pay out compensation if a person suffers a serious injury or death as the result of an accident. It can cover against loss of income and based on the insurance policy purchased, can also provide financial cover for bills and other expenses.
Tools & Equipment Cover
We all know the saying ‘A tradie is as good as his tools'. If your tools are damaged, lost or stolen it can be an expensive exercise to get them replaced. Make sure your tools and equipment are covered for replacement or repair if damage or loss occurs.

A Tradie or contractor may want to consider arranging public liability, tools & equipment and personal accident cover. Also if they have staff, they may need workers’ compensation for employees.
Some trade associations also require insurance cover in order for you to be allowed to work in that state. For example, in Victoria, plumbers are required to obtain a specific level of public liability insurance under the Victorian Building Authority (VBA) to continue providing plumbing services and maintain their licence.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does a contractor tradesman need personal accident insurance or worker’s compensation insurance?
It is advisable for sole traders to take out personal accident insurance for cover in the event they suffer a serious injury or death as the result of an accident. Unlike other workers, they may not be able to have time off for injury or illness, due to the potential extended leave that may limit their ability to maintain a stable income. Personal accident insurance is designed to cover an insured against loss of income and based on the cover purchased, can provide financial cover for bills and other expenses.
If a contractor has employees, they may need to arrange Workers’ Compensation cover. Workers compensation insurance covers the wages of employees if they suffer a serious work-related injury or death.

Does Marsh offer monthly payment options for tradies insurance?
Do tradies need professional indemnity insurance?
Tradies may require professional indemnity insurance if they are, for example, providing advice or design services to clients as part of their business activities. Professional indemnity insurance can help cover a tradies business against allegations of negligence involving an alleged breach of professional duty. Such cover is ordinarily excluded under public liability insurance.
We recommend you contact your insurance broker to determine if your business activity exposes you to any of these risks.
As a sub-contractor, am I covered for public liability insurance under the business that has hired me?
Unfortunately, this is not a simple yes or no answer. There are situations where the sub-contractor can be covered under a client’s public liability policy and others where they would be required to cover the claim under their own. As this is circumstantial, we strongly recommend sub-contractors arrange their own public liability insurance to ensure they are appropriately covered.
If a sub-contractor injures a third party or damages their property while completing the work they were hired for, they may be covered by their client’s public liability policy to a certain extent. However, if for example a sub-contractor is negligent and leaves his tools out causing a third party to trip and injure themselves, then this claim may need to be made under the sub-contractor’s policy.
Do you quote for tradies insurance over the phone?
Yes, if you provide sufficient information and satisfy underwriter criteria, you can obtain a quote over the phone.
